What are Public Ticketed Sails and how do they work?
We understand that not everyone has 49 friends, co-workers or family to book a private Tall Ship Sailing Event. It is with this in mind that we started offering sails on San Francisco Bay with various themes like weekend wine-downs, SF Giants Games, Sunset Sails, Valentines Day Celebrations, Mother and Father’s Day trips or Hump Day sails to get you out on the water! We are constantly adding new trips and new destinations so check back often to see what fun we have planned for you to come aboard!
The premise is simple, purchase a ticket or two or ten for you and your desired guests and come sailing aboard our 72-foot Tall Ship Replica Gas Light. These events originate from Richmond, Marina Bay, Pier 40 in San Francisco or Sausalito. We vary locations to include more people. You are welcome to bring your own food and a cash bar is always available for you to sip an adult beverage onboard.
What if you only have a limited number in your group but want to enjoy all that Bay Lights Charters and Gas Light can offer, call us and we can build a public sail around your group. If you don’t mind sharing the boat, we can put your group together with another group and set sail!
Once we leave the docks, we will raise the sails, guests are welcome to participate in the raising of our traditional gaff rigged ship. We will sail around the San Francisco Bay and tell stories of history, wild life and key sights within view. Ask the skipper to take the helm and see what it is like to drive a beauty like Gas Light. Most of these events are 3 hours but this can vary. Each trip is customized designed to maximize the experience.

Join us for an introductory class on how to sail a gaff - rig Tall Ship aboard Gas Light
Date And Time
This introductory sailing class will take students through a brief history of the scow schooners and the role they played on San Francisco Bay during the gold rush era. This will be a hands-on class that students will learn the workings of a traditional gaff rig sailing vessel. Some topics will include how to ballantine a line, hoisting sail, maneuvering a schooner rig on different points of sail and so much more. This class will include a chance to get on the water aboard the schooner 'Gas Light' to learn about these classic vessels under sail, take the helm, and spend a day on the Bay in the most unique way.

Some of our most popular events are:
Sunset Sails- These sails are typically 2.5 hour events where we leave the dock an hour before sunset and return just after dusk. Board in one of 3 locations: Sausalito, San Francisco, or Marina Bay in Richmond. We will cruise around the most iconic parts of San Francisco Bay, often including Alcatraz, Angel Island, the Marin Headlands, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and the San Francisco Skyline, all while enjoying an unforgettable sunset from the deck of our Schooner, Gas Light! This sail is romantic and magical in the fact that the lighting is ever changing and passengers play witness to the City Lights coming all aglow. We have a cash bar available for adult beverages.
Weekend Wine Down Sails- These sails are typically 2.5 hour events where we leave the dock mid-day on Sundays. We can board in one of 3 locations: Sausalito, San Francisco, or Marina Bay in Richmond. This is a great way to close out your weekend and enjoy the negative ions that moving water produce. These negative ions are known to relive stress, reduce tension, fight depression, and increase energy! Who doesn’t want to set up their week with these benefits!
Hump Day sails- These sails are typically 2.5 hour events where we leave the dock early evening on Wednesday or Hump Nights. We can board in one of 3 locations: Sausalito, San Francisco, or Marina Bay in Richmond. Join us for a leisurely evening sail, take in the views of the San Francisco skyline, Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, Tiburon, Alcatraz and Angel Islands, all while experiencing the fresh breezes.
Valentine’s Day Sail- Join us for a majestic evening sail on the San Francisco Bay with your sweetheart snuggled up next to you enjoying the city lights all aglow. Fall in LOVE all over again with the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, Alcatraz, all as your backdrop - enjoy a warm adult beverage from our cash bar. Complimentary light snacks and candy buffet included. Make Valentines a day you both will remember for years to come! Gas Light is one of a kind gem on the bay that will impress all who come aboard!
Giants Game Sails- Join us aboard our classic scow schooner in the exciting McCovey Cove to cheer on our San Francisco Giants!!! We love having such a unique and lively basin to root on our favorite baseball team. Meet up with other fans and let us take you out to the ball game! Pier 40, Sausalito or Marina Bay in Richmond to McCovey Cove for a game is a minimum of a 3-hour charter. Board Gas Light at any of our available and convenient locations 30-minutes prior to first pitch and we will set sail to McCovey Cove for the game. Guests will enjoy not only the game but views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Skyline, Angel Island and Alcatraz while on the Bay. Once we arrive in McCovey Cove, we will drop our anchor to enjoy the game from the water. Listen to the play-by-play on deck while enjoying traditional ball park food.
Spooky Fun Halloween Sail- Your Halloween celebration will take you around the Bay as you celebrate with your friends. Our crew and our MC, Captain Steve, will treat you to beautiful views, light snacks, a cash bar and music as you party on our spacious schooner, GAS LIGHT. Enjoy a Halloween celebration on the Bay like you've never experienced before!
Holiday boat parade- These sails are typically 2.5 hour events where we leave the dock early evening on Wednesday or Hump Nights. We can board in one of 3 locations: Sausalito, San Francisco, or Marina Bay in Richmond. Join us for a leisurely evening in which we will participate in the lighted boat parade. Guests will witness true creativity and holiday spirit as well as the stunning views of the city lights.
New Year’s Eve Sunset Sail- These sails are typically 2.5 hour events where we leave the dock early evening on New Years Eve. We can board in one of 3 locations: Sausalito, San Francisco, or Marina Bay in Richmond. We will sail around the San Francisco Bay's iconic landmarks, often including Alcatraz, Angel Island, Tiburon, the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, and San Francisco Skyline. You'll take in these sights from the special vantage point of the bay, on the deck of a tall ship sailboat. Grab a drink from our cash bar and get a lovely goodbye to the year behind while you welcome in the New Year's Eve festivities!
Eco Tours- This sail will start in Sausalito, Horseshoe Cove and take you under the Golden Gate Bridge and out to Point Bonita Lighthouse. This is a prime area for wildlife, You'll learn about the diverse ecosystems of the San Francisco Bay, with frequent wildlife sightings both in the air and water with more than 200 species of birds, and California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, Pacific Harbor Porpoise, Gray Whales, Blue Whales, Orcas, Humpback, Jellies, Sea otters chances are you will get to witness nature in all her glory!
