One recent guest added the following in our Ships Log:
"Thank you for such a memorable and perfect venue to lay our grandfather, John to rest. He was a true lover of the sea and having all his family onboard meant everything! There was not a dry eye onboard as we rang the 8 bells and poured his favorite scotch along side his ashes. We all could feel him smiling down at us. Thank you for EVERYTHING! “- John III
Another recent guest added the following in our Ships Log:
Thank you for the lovely send off for my Dad! Wow, this is another sign of your all around great service. You all were so helpful and friendly and made the day so enjoyable and memorable. We didn’t want to disembark at the end of the charter. It was all so perfect, we couldn’t have planned it better, spreading his ashes by Angel Island, I have good memories from when I was a kid, of taking our bikes on the ferry and riding around Angel Island and having picnics. And when I got home yesterday I looked at my pics from us on the Gas Light 8 years ago and I have a picture of my Dad and I standing in the front right side of the boat, in the same spot where we released his ashes.
Thank you so much,
Kerstin

The minimum amount of time is 2 hours but if you would like to raise the sails we suggest 3 hours. It is amazing to hoist sails and turn off the engine and glide by the iconic SF sites. We find most people enjoy the extra time to tell stories and reminisce about your loved one.

Yes, anything biodegradable is ok to spread with the ashes. We see rose petals, or hand written notes (on rice paper) or once we saw a bottle of the diseased own brewed beer poured on top of the ashes! People often place flowers on the water after the ashes. It makes a beautiful ceremony and adds a really nice touch. The ceremony is for the living to honor and make it memorable. Be creative! Our ‘crew’ is here to help.

Yes. We welcome passengers of all ages, from babies to adults that are into their 90s. For small children and elderly our boat is perfect! She sails flat and has wide decks with a large below decks space to get out of the elements. Everyone is comfortable on our tall ship, she is truly one of a kind! We have an assortment of PFDs to fit children of various ages. Adults are not required to wear a life jacket, unless they want to.
We ask that there is at least a 1-1 adult/kid ratio and if the kids listen well to instructions (safety instructions are important). Kids from 5-18 can often be involved in the sailing of the boat. We have a lot of experience with kids on the boats. While our boat is not wheelchair accessible, she is quite stable and we find as long as the person is able to climb a few steps to board the boat there aren’t any issues while sailing.

Please dress in layers (long-sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, wind jacket is the minimum of what we'd suggest, more if you get cold), long pants or wind pants are recommended. Any extra warm clothes can be stowed inside the boat if you don’t use them. Hats that can be tied on are also good.
Please wear soft-soled shoes such as tennis shoes. We have extra jackets, blankets, sunscreen and complimentary hot beverages on board.
For winter or evening trips dress warmly. We recommend a warm jacket, gloves and a hat that doesn’t come off easily.Remember it will be cooler on the water than on the land because of the wind.

Yes, there is a large open concept speak-easy like enclosed cabin with a large sitting area, place for your buffet, built in bar and two restrooms.

Need a soundtrack for your sail? We can help!
“The changing of the watch” tradition for seamen is the ringing of a bell 8 times.
We like to incorporate this tradition into all the memorials we perform. It is not only symbolic for the end of a shift but also the passing of a sailor is marked with the ringing of eight bells and the beginning of another. ... With the end of the watch, eight bells are sounded and the sailor was relieved. It is a very poignant moment.
San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island and the Pacific Ocean have special meaning for many and all make for a beautiful backdrop to release ashes into the sea. Our Captain is available to advise on any one of a number of beautiful locations for your private service.
Gas Light, a 72 foot Scow Schooner replica and tall ship is an excellent yacht for scattering ashes. She is not only stable and comfortable but there is plenty of room both above and below decks. You and your guests enjoy the ride and the sights and sounds of San Francisco Bay.
